Design has branched out in new directions, galvanizing young practitioners, sparking novel business models, and attracting worldwide attention. A designer today can choose to focus on interaction, interfaces, the Web, visualization, socially minded infrastructures, immersive spaces, biodesign, sustainability, video games, critical scenarios, and, yes, even products and furniture. Paola Antonelli, 'The New Frontiers of Design' @ Aspen Ideas FestivalPaola Antonelli - The New Frontiers of DesignPaola Antonelli is a senior curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, New York City. She was recently rated one of the one hundred most powerful people in the world of art by Art Review. Tim Brown, 'Evolution of Design' @ Aspen Ideas FestivalAs designers become more involved in solving the world's problems, dealing with complexity becomes paramount. This requires a paradigm shift for the practice of design, moving from thinking about the world in the way that Isaac Newton encouraged us to think about it to the way Charles Darwin thought about it. Embracing a more evolutionary approach to design can do more than enable us to create better products and services. We can use these ideas and principles to tackle some of the most important challenges of our time. From Blueprint to Genetic Code - Tim Brown (CEO, IDEO)Like everything else in life, design is evolving, forcing us to give up the very essence of the Newtonian notion of design: the blueprint. Massimo Vignelli, 'Good Design Lasts Longer' @ OFFSET (2009)Massimo Vignelli talks Life, Typography, Work and a journey in the world of graphic design. Massimo Vignelli was a designer who worked in a number of areas ranging from package design through houseware design and furniture design to public signage and showroom design. He was the co-founder of Vignelli Associates, with his wife, Lella Vignelli. His ethos was, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything," and this was reflected in the broad range of his work. Vignelli worked firmly within the Modernist tradition, and focused on simplicity through the use of basic geometric forms in all his work. George Lois is an American art director, designer, and author. Lois is perhaps best known for over 92 covers he designed for Esquire magazine from 1962 to 1972. In 2008, The Museum of Modern Art exhibited 32 of Lois' Esquire covers. Lois is the 1996 AIGA Gold Medal Winner. He is an entrepreneur, scientist, and author, with expertise in the field of intelligent technology. As of May 2014 and since 2010, Teller has been working as 'Captain of Moonshots', directing Google X laboratories where a "moonshot" is a long-term project to solve a problem with a radical (often futuristic) solution. Projects at Google X include Google Glass, Google Driverless Car, Google Contact Lens, and Project Loon. Google X also spun its project called Genie out into a stand alone business in 2012.
Tom Kelley & David Kelley, 'Creative Confidence' @ Talks@GoogleIDEO founder and Stanford d.school creator David Kelley and his brother Tom Kelley, IDEO partner and the author of the bestselling "The Art of Innovation", have written a powerful and compelling book on unleashing the creativity that lies within each and every one of us. Jan Chipchase, 'The Ethics of Creativity' @ India Design ForumJan Chipchase, Executive Creative Director of Global Insights at frog, former Principal Scientist at Nokia, began this session speaking of how one brings insights into design. Design is a crucial part of the everyday experience for people. As Jan points out, the only way to achieve this is by getting into the context of the everyday life of people. It is also crucial to interact with people in such a way that allows for meaningful data to be collected. Where's the Phone : Jan Chipchase, Cui Yanqing & Fumiko IchikawaA series of street surveys carried out in 11 cities on 4 continents to help understand where people carry their mobile phones and why. Originally designed to understand the extent to which people noticed incoming communication according to carrying location. Now used with in-depth qualitative techniques such as home & contextual interviews to obtain a broader statistical and photographic snapshot of consumers. Recently extended to include keys & money and physical forms of object customisation. Brendan Boyle is a Partner at IDEO and his passion for invention drives his responsibilities at the company. He founded and leads its toy-invention studio, known as the Toy Lab. Under his leadership, they have invented and licensed over 150 consumer products, specializing in the design of kid-centric goods, services and experiences. He is also passionate about the intersection between Play + Design Thinking and how these two ideas can bring about creative solutions to today’s complex business challenges—so much so that he created a course “From Play to Innovation” that he teaches at Stanford’s d.School and where he was named a Knight Fellow Favorite Professor. He is a co-author of The Klutz Books of Inventions and sits on the board of the National Institute for Play where he focuses on bringing play-based techniques to innovation.
